Canada

  • Allergy Alert Update:  CFIA and Canadian importers of the following products alert people with allergies to fish, shrimp and sesame not to consume Chongga Mat Kimchi (1.2kg), or any of the following kimchi products manufactured by Daesang FNF Corporation, all of which contain undeclared fish, shrimp or sesame: Old Fermented Kimchi (1 kg), Poggi Kimchi (1 kg), Mat Kimchi (2.5 kg), Poggi Kimchi (3 kg) and Yeolmu Kimchi (500g). The above-named products, which were imported from Korea and distributed across Canada, have been recalled by the Canadian importers.
  • Allergy Alert: Baxters Canada Inc. recalls Primo brand Hearty Chicken Soup (525 ml cans; Lot code EST 142 2356 9 230), because the affected cans contain Minestrone soup, which has milk ingredients that do not appear on the Hearty Chicken Soup list of ingredients.
  • Allergy Alert: Summer Star Trading recalls Maple Smell Dried Sweet Potato (400g; Code #4.01.032.00.6), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.
  • Allergy Alert: Loblaw Companies Ltd. recalls Butcher’s Choice Uncooked Breaded Pork Leg Inside Cutlet (variable kg; Best before 2011OC10) due to the presence of undeclared wheat.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Medical Device Safety Alert (Saudi Arabia): Saudi FDA warns the public about an “imitated” inhaler device marketed under the name “Air O Chamber”, meant to imitate the AeroChamber inhaler. Saudi FDA advises consumers not to use this product, which may not deliver the correct prescribed dose of medication, and has taken action to ban entry of the product into the Kingdom and to remove it from local markets.

  • Allergy Alert: Prolab Nutrition Inc. recalls some Prolab® Pure Whey, Prolab® Advanced Pure Whey Protein, and Prolab® Whey Isolate Protein (various flavors and sizes), because the protein items may contain undeclared milk, wheat and gluten. The recalled products were distributed by retail stores, mail order and direct delivery in the following states, provinces and countries: Alabama; California; Connecticut; Florida; Georgia; Idaho; Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Kansas; Maryland; Massachusetts; Michigan; Minnesota; Missouri; Montana; Nevada; New Hampshire; New Jersey; New Mexico; New York; North Carolina; Ohio; Oklahoma; Pennsylvania; South Dakota; Tennessee; Texas; Utah; Vermont; Virginia; Washington; West Virginia; Wyoming; Ontario, Canada; Australia; Malaysia; and Russia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Farmers All Natural Creamery (Wellman, IA) recalls Whole Milk (Plant #19888; Sell by October 22, 2011), because the milk may not have been properly pasteurized. The recalled milk was sold to four distributors: UNFI (Aurora, CO), UNFI (Lancaster, TX), Calma Optimal (Franklin Park, IL) and Natural Brands (Wood Dale, IL).

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: La Maison de Campagne 6600 inc. (Saint-Jean-Baptiste, QC) recalls Pesto & Cie brand Pesto citronnelle/Lemon grass pesto (212 mL glass jars; all lots purchased before September 24, 2011), because the product was held without refrigeration before sale, and may present a health hazard.
  • Food Safety Alert/Recall: Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health warns the public not to consume the following recalled smoked salmon products, because they might be contaminated with Listeria and Salmonella: Strubs Danish Style Smoked Grav-Lox Atlantic Salmon (300g; Product code 09262011), Strubs Norwegian Style Steelhead Salmon, Sliced Smoked (200g packages; Product code 09192011) and Strubs Deli Choice Smoked Salmon Bits (300g; Product codes 09192011 and 09262011). The recalled smoked salmon products were processed in Toronto, but may have been distributed elsewhere in Ontario.

The recalled products were manufactured in the USA and distributed by retail stores, mail order and direct delivery in Australia.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Davies Bakery Pty Ltd. recalls Bakers Life Multigrain Sandwich Sliced Bread (650g; Best before 12 OCT 2011), because the product may contain bits of plastic. The recalled bread was sold in Aldi stores in Victoria only.

United States

  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert: The Arkansas Department of Health warns consumers that a number of mercury poisoning cases in South Texas appear to be linked to the use of Crema Aguamary, a cosmetic produced in Mexico and not approved for use in the USA. Use of this product can result in elevated blood levels of mercury.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert Amended: The September 30th Allergy Alert issued by CFIA has been amended to correctly identify the undeclared allergens present in the recalled Kimchi products, and to provide additional distribution information. The following products of Korea were recalled by the Canadian importers, due to the presence of undeclared fish, shrimp and/or sesame: Chongga brand Kimchi Richi (80g), Daesang FNF Corporation Gat Kimchi (500g), and Daesang FNF Corporation Godulbbaegi (200g). The products are known to have been distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, but may also have been distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Foodfest International 2000 Inc. (Concord, ON) recalls Strubs ready-to-eat Danish Style Smoked Grav-Lox Atlantic Salmon (7 oz/200g packages; Lot code 09262011), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Grav-Lox was distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Brittles ‘N More Ltd. recalls Brittles ‘N More Peanut Brittle (200g; Code 729081), due to the presence of glass particles. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Okanagan Spring Brewery Ltd. recalls Okanagan Spring Brewmaster’s Black Lager (6 x 341 mL; codes J0911 (1700 to 1815) V), due to the presence of process residues. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia.
  • Outbreak Alert: CBC News reports that six patients and one employee at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home in Moncton, NB were infected with Salmonella in an outbreak that started September 18th. One resident of the Home has died.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Tesco recalls Tesco Coffee and Walnut Cake, 380g (Use by 07/10/11, 09/10/11, and 10/10/11) due to the accidental inclusion of pecans, which were not listed in the recipe and are not declared on the product label.
  • Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): On August 10, 2011, Hickory Smokehouse Miami, Inc. (Hialeah, FL, USA) recalled 25 cases of Fjord Superior Norwegian cure Smoked Salmon / Hickory House Superior Smoked Salmon Sliced retail pack (Batch 24182), after the Florida Department of Agriculture found Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of the product. The recalled Smoked Salmon was exported to the Netherlands. FDA issued a Warning Letter to Hickory Smokehouse on August 1st, detailing a long list of “significant deviations to the seafood HACCP and food CGMP regulations” and misbranding issues.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Cervera A/S recalls Worchester Sauce (1L glass bottle; Best before 10th June and 16 June 2013), because fermentation has occurred in some bottles.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1365): Diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning toxins in chilled mussels from Italy; distributed to Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1367): Ochraoxin A in wede aba from Ghana; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1368): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen chicken fillets from Brazil, via the Netherlands; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1369): Insect infestation in roasted and salted pistachio nut kernels from the United States, via Slovakia; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1370): Bacillus cereus in couscous from the United Kingdom; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1371): Oxamyl in cucumbers from the Czech Republic; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1372): Chlormequat in pears from the Netherlands; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1373): Undeclared soya in corn flakes from Germany, via the Czech Republic; distributed to the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
