United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc. (Dakota City, NE) recalls Chuck Fine Ground Beef 80/20 (10-lb chubs; Best before or freeze by 11/13/11; Est. 245C), because the ground beef products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled 40,948 pounds of ground beef was supplied to institutions and distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Recall: B&M Inc. (Mount Vernon, MO) recalls O Organics Organic Celery Seed (1.8-oz glass bottles; Lot No. 1381102A, 2141102A, 2591106A, 2741106A, 2921102A and 3321110A; Best by dates (respectively) May 18, 2013, August 02, 2013, September 16, 2013, October 01, 2013, October 19, 2013 and November 28, 2013), due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled Celery Seed was sold from May 25, 2011 through December 16, 2011 at all Safeway-owned stores, including Safeway, Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Vons.
  • Food Safety Recall: Swanson Health Products recalls Swanson Organic Celery Seed Whole (1.4-oz plastic bottles; Best by 03JUN2013; Lot #1541102C), after being advised by its supplier, B&M Inc., that the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Celery Seed was sold at the Swanson Health Products retail store (Fargo, ND), shipped directly to on-line or mail-order customers, or held for pickup at Swanson headquarters.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The California Department of Food and Agriculture has lifted its quarantine on nearly all Organic Pastures raw milk and dairy products, including raw milk, raw butter, raw cream, and raw Qephor. Only the raw colostrum remains quarantined. The quarantine was imposed after five cases of E. coli O157:H7 illness in four different California counties were linked epidemiologically to Organic Pastures raw milk. Three of the five affected children were hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a sometimes fatal complication of E. coli O157:H7 infections.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Euromax Foods (Brampton, ON) recalls Euromax brand Smoked Mackerel (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked Mackerel Fillets (Best before 21DE 11 and 28DE 11), Smoked Herring (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked Herring Fillets (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked Rainbow Trout (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked White Fish (Best before 21DE 11), and Smoked Halibut (Best before 21DE 11), because the products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled smoked fish products were sold in variable weights only at Euromax Foods retail store (Brampton, Ontario).

Europe

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Wards in several north-west London and Bedfordshire hospitals have been closed, and visiting has been severely restricted, in order to contain an outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis in these hospitals. The affected hospitals include Northwick Park Hospital, Bedford Hospital, Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Montagu Hospital, and Warwick Hospital.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): La Société Salaison Polette ZA recalls Môssieur Polette, Nos Regions on du Talent, Cora, Match chez Leclerc, Casino, Monoprix, and Match brand Saucisson Secs / Saucisses Sèches Label Rouge dry sausages (All lots of product sold from 01/10/11 to 15/12/11), due to a strong probability of Salmonella contamination.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Coles Chocolate Cake with Icing Cake Mix (470g cardboard box; All best before dates up to and including 16 Dec 12), due to the presence of undeclared sesame. The recalled products were distributed nationwide.

  • Allergy Alert: Velvet Crème Popcorn Co. (Westwood, KS) issues Allergy Alert to advise the public that Velvet Crème Peanut Brittle (4-oz bags) contains undeclared milk; Velvet Crème Tail Gate Crunch (1-lb and 8-oz bags) contains undeclared wheat and soy; and Velvet Crème Sweet Cajun Heat (1-lb and 8-oz bags) contains undeclared wheat and soy. The affected items are not identified by lot number – they were sold at the company’s retail store in Westwood, Kansas prior to December 13, 2011.
  • Allergy Alert: B. Roberts Foods (Charlotte, NC) recalls Harris Teeter, Fresh Foods Market, American Cuisine, Meatloaf with Red Skin Mashed Potatoes (17-oz refrigerated pkgs; Est 19198; Use by 12/20/11), due to misbranding and the presence of undeclared anchovies. The recalled products were sold in Harris Teeter supermarkets in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington, DC.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Hannaford (Scarborough, ME) recalls variable-weight packages of ground beef, prepared and purchased at Hannaford stores on or before December 17, 2011, due to contamination with antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium. The recalled ground beef products have been linked epidemiologically to 14 cases of salmonellosis reported from several northeastern states.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Korea Food Trading (Vaughan, ON) recalls Nonghyup Arumchan Matkimchi (500g), Nonghyup Arumchan Pogikimchi (500g) and Nonghyup Suncheon Pogikimchi (1000g), due to the presence of undeclared fish and shrimp. The recalled kimchi products were imported from Korea and distributed in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Kam Wah Resources Co. Ltd. recalls Xiangxiangzui Dried Bean Curd, also known as Instant Dried Tofu (206g; all packages), due to the presence of undeclared sesame seeds. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Associated Brands recalls Table Talk Chicken Noodle Soup Mix (260g; Lot code 129124), due to the presence of undeclared egg. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Consumer Product Safety Alert: Health Canada reminds consumers that high levels of lead and cadmium may be found in a wide variety of children’s jewelery products.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): The Co-operative recalls The Co-operative Scottish Smoked Salmon (160g; Use by 21 December and 24 December 2011), because the products contain high levels of Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): Axfood AB recalls Garant brand Swedish Veal Mince, 17% fat (500g; Expiry 15 December) and KA Lagerstrom Veal Mince (2.5 kg; Expiry December 16), due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Food Withdrawal (Denmark): January Import A/S withdraws Sun Island Dried Apricots (300g; Production date 24.10.2011; Best before 24.04.2013; Lot code 9730), due to bulging packages. There is no health risk associated with this withdrawal.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1848): Sulfite in coconut cream from Thailand, via Sweden; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1851): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled tuna salad from Belgium; distributed to France.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1852): Undeclared milk ingredient in potato chips from Sweden; distributed to Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Japan): More than 1,000 inmates of Osaka Prison (Sakai, Osaka Prefecture) suffered food poisoning overnight Tuesday. The health center has closed the prison kitchen for three days and inmates are being served from emergency preserved food supplies.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand and Australia): Green Monkey Limited recalls Green Monkey Organic Baby Food (100g pouches; All varieties and batches), due to a packaging fault that could lead to a risk of foreign plastic matter inside the pouches. The recalled baby food products were sold in supermarkets throughout New Zealand and also exported to Australia, where they are sold through Woolworths Supermarkets.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Australia): Nova Pharmaceuticals Australasia Pty Ltd. recalls Great Life Benifex Eucalyptus Oil 100% (200mL amber PET bottle; Sold between 14 October 2011 and 14 December 2011), because the child-resistant closures on some bottles are not fully engaged. The recalled product was sold in ALDI stores in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

  • Allergy Alert: Rhee Bros., Inc. (Hanover, MD) recalls ASSI brand Gyeong Dan Korean Cake (8-oz pkg; Item #20649D) due to the presence of undeclared egg. The recalled product was distributed nationwide in Asian food retail stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. (Jacksonville, FL) recalls Sunrise Assorted Flavor Gummy Bears (self-serve bulk bins; sold between November 14 and December 13) due to the possibility of metal contamination. The recalled bulk Gummy Bears were available in five Winn-Dixie stores in Florida and Louisiana, including St. Johns Commons (Jacksonville, FL), Concord Shopping Mall (Miami, FL), Pepper Tree Plaza (Margate, FL), Main Street Square (Fern Park, FL) and 70431 Hwy 21 (Covington, LA).
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: O’Neal’s Feeders Supply Inc. recalls Arrow Brand 21% Dog Chunks (40-lb bag; Packaging date codes 4K0335 to 4K1335), Arrow Brand Super Proeaux Dog Food (40-lb bag; Packaging date codes 4K0335 to 4K1335) and Arrow Brand Professional Formula Dog Food (50-lb bag; Packaging date codes 4K0335 to 4K1335), due to elevated levels of aflatoxin.  The recalled dog foods were distributed in Louisiana and Texas.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Vincor International Inc. recalls Jackson Triggs 2009 Méthode Cuve Close – Sparkling Wine (750 mL; Code 2011-05-11), Jackson Triggs 2010 Méthode Cuve Close – Sparkling Wine (750 mL; Codes 2011-08-08 and 2011-08-09), and Open 2010 Sociable – Sparkling Wine (750 mL; Code 2011-07-01), due to contamination with glass fragments. The recalled wines were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: 3903052 Canada Inc. (Establishment #1874; Boisbriand, QC) expands its earlier recall and public warning to include the following Clic brand cheese products, which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes: Moujadalé (300-400g; Best before date up to and including 11 Mar 2012), Riviera (300-400g; Best before date up to and including 11 Feb 2012), Tressé (300-400g; Best before date up to and including 11 Nov 2012), Vachekaval (300-400g; Best before date up to and including 11 Mar 2012), and Desi Butter Chee (454g and 907g; Lot code ending in 45 or lower). The products were distributed in Québec and Ontario and may also have been shipped to other provinces. One illness has been linked to consumption of the recalled cheese.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda recalls Asda ‘Choosen by You’ Hot & Spicy King Prawns with Garlic Mayonnaise Dip (240g; Use by 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 December 2011), due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Allergy Alert (Sweden): Axfood AB withdraws Eldorado Instant Noodles (85g pkgs; pork, chicken, shrimp, and mushroom flavors), and Eldorado Instant Noodles (65g cardboard cups; chicken and shrimp flavors) due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Greece): EFET alerts the public to the seizure of 34 tonnes of finished confectionery products and raw materials, and to the suspension of operations of Bolero Sugar Trace SA, because the foodstuffs were unsafe and unfit for human consumption. Please refer to the official notice for additional details.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoires Cooper recalls Arnican 4 pour Cent Crème (50g tube; Lot #005586, 005587, 005588, 005589, 005590, 005591, 005592, 005593, and 005594; Expiry 02/2014), due to contamination with an unidentified non-pathogenic microorganism.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (Australia): Whiter Smile recalls Dr. Collins All-White Bleaching Kit (22% Carbamide Peroxide), Smile Fusion System with Viocin (22% Carbamide Peroxide) and Tres-White Pre-Filled Trays (Hydrogen Peroxide), because the products contain peroxide concentrations in excess of the recognized safe limits.
