United States

  • Allergy Alert: Fung Shing International Corp (Maspeth, NY) recalls Star Light Coconut Candy Keo Dua (7-oz plastic dish; Product of Vietnam; UPC 8936015503088; No lot/date codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was sold in New York and Ohio.
  • Allergy Alert: Fung Shing International Corp (Maspeth, NY) recalls Star Light Coconut Candy Keo Dua La Dua (7-oz plastic dish; Product of Vietnam; UPC 8936015503071; No lot/date codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was sold in New York and Ohio.
  • Food Safety Recall: PGP International, Inc. (Juda, WI) recalls Whey Protein Isolate, 90% (1500-lb Supersacks and 20 kg Kraft lined bags; Lot #J1360, J1361, J1364, J1365, J2015, J2026, J2027, J2028, J2029, J2030, J2034, J2035, J2036, J2037, and J2038) and Whey Protein Hydrolysate, 90% (20 kg Kraft lined bags; Lot #J1364 and J2034), because the products (127,335 lbs in total) may be contaminated with Salmonella. The firm-initiated recall was carried out by telephone or email and a follow-up letter on March 15, 2012, and is ongoing. The recalled products were distributed to Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Food Recall: Bi-Lo recalls Southern Home Grated Parmesan Cheese (3 oz and 8 oz sizes), Southern Home Grated Parmesan and Romano Cheese (8 oz) and Southern Home 1/3 Less Fat Grated Parmesan Cheese (8 oz), due to a quality problem.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Uncle T Food Ltd (Richmond, BC) recalls Sanyo S.Itiban brand Salt Sauce Noodle (5 x 100g pkgs; Product of Japan; UPC 4 901734 000280; All lots), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Alert: Canada Safeway and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warn the public not to consume Boskovich brand Fresh Parsley (sold in bunches enclosed with a band indicating the Boskovich brand and Product of USA), because the product may be contaminated with Cryptosporidium. The affected product was sold only on March 19, 2012 from the Canada Safeway store located at 124 Primrose Dr., Lawson Heights Mall, Saskatoon, SK.
  • Food Safety Recall Expansion: Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds Ltd. (Parkside, SK) recalls Sprouting Seeds Display Pack (75g sunflower pack; UPC 7 73295 11293 1; Lot 4DPSM13) and Sprouting Seeds Best Sellers (2 x 75g sunflower packs; UPC 7 73295 11290 0; Lot 1BSSM21), because the seeds may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products are known to have been distributed in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick and may have been distributed nationally.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Creme D’Or Ltd. withdraws Cafe Tasse Chocolat Fin Artisanal Noir (45g bar; Best before 15 September 2013), due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Musgrave Retail Partners NI withdraws Centra Italian Bolognese Ravioli (250g; All date codes; Supplied to Centra and SuperValu stores in Northern Ireland) and SuperValu Italian Bolognese Ravioli (250; All date codes; Supplied to Centra and SuperValu stores in Northern Ireland and Budgens stores in the UK), due to the presence of celery that was not declared in the allergy information box.
  • Food Safety Alert (Germany): Germany warns the public about the presence of dioxins in excess of allowable limits in eggs from two producers, and warns that eggs from a producer of organic eggs may have been exposed to dioxin-like PCBs.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0492): Excessive aluminium in sweet potato vermicelli from China, via the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0495): Oxamyl in string beans from Morocco; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0497): Insect infestation in peas from Poland; distributed to Ireland, Poland and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0499): Pesticide residues in chilled lollo rosso lettuce from France; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0500): Escherichia coli in frozen jackknife clams from Italy; distributed to Italy and Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0502): Mercury in dried porcini mushrooms from China; distributed to Austria, Germany and Kazakhstan.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0503): Undeclared milk in dark chocolate from Italy; distributed to Italy and the United Kingdom.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Woolworths Ltd. recalls Macro Whole Foods Dark Chocolate Easter Egg and Twist Sweets – lactose free (All Best before dates) and Macro Whole Foods Dark Chocolate Easter Bunny – lactose free (All Best before dates), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were sold in Woolworths, Safeway, Flemings and Food for Less Supermarkets nationally.
  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Heritage Fine Chocolates recalls Heritage Belgian Milk Chocolate Egg with Exquisite Chocolate Truffes (270g brown cardboard box; Batch #M011, M012, M013, M014 and M016), due to the presence of undeclared almond, hazelnut and gluten. The recalled product was sold nationally in Coles Supermarkets.

United States

  • Outbreak Alert Final Update: CDC has released its final report on the E. coli O26 outbreak that was linked to the consumption of raw clover sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants. Twenty-nine people were infected by the outbreak strain. Cases were reported from eleven states, including Alabama (1), Arkansas (1), Iowa (5), Kansas (2), Michigan (10), Missouri (3), Ohio (3), Pennsylvania (1), Washington (1), Wisconsin (1), and West Virginia (1). Seven people were hospitalized. None of the victims developed hemolytic uremic syndrome and there were no deaths.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Fraud Alert: FDA is warning doctors that a second counterfeit version of the cancer drug Avastin has been found in the USA, packaged as the Turkish brand of the medication, according to an Associated Press report.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Le Grand Marché Col-Fax inc. (Laval, QC) various cakes and pastries, due to the presence of undeclared soy and sulfites. 
  • Food Safety Alert: The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control is warning the public not to consume Tomme d’Or cheese (all lots), after sampling revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The cheese is manufactured by Moonstruck Organic Cheese (Saltspring Island, BC). None of the other types of cheese manufactured by Moonstruck is affected by this alert. The contaminated product was sold at various retailers throughout British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Yotta DC inc. (Boucherville, QC) recalls Soupe aux tomates (1 litre glass jars) Soupe au poireau et au chou-fleur (1 liter glass jars) and Moussaka (250 ml glass jars). Because the recalled products were displayed without refrigeration up to an including March 28, 2012, their microbiological safety cannot be assured.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): TWI Foods recalls TWI brand Pistachio Cookies (200g and 400g), Almond Cookies (200g and 400g), Coconut Cookies (200g and 400g), and Almond Cake Rusk (750g), due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): DK Trading ApS recalls Fresh Chicken Breast Fillets (2.5 kg vacuum packs; Product of Poland; Lot 1207901; Expiry 1/4-2012) and several products manufactured from the imported chicken breasts, because Salmonella Newport was found in samples of the fresh chicken meat.   • Food Safety Recall Update (Greece): Greece’s Food Safety Agency (EFET) announces that the destruction of frozen minced beef and spicy frozen meatballs (Product of Germany) – recalled by Lidl Hellas due to contamination with E. coli O157 – has been completed.
  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): Caseificio Valdostano recalls Frozen Blue Shark (Lot 260112; Expiry 28/02/2014), due to excessive mercury contamination.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0480): Unauthorized sibutramine in slimming capsules from China; distributed to Bulgaria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0485): Mercury in salted chicken breasts from Brazil; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0486): Cadmium and lead in dried celery leaves from Germany, via Belgium; distributed to Belgium and France.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0487): Salmonella in extracted soybean meal from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0488): Suspected fraud and incorrect expiry date of egg powder from Poland; distributed to Lithuania.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0490): Folpet in lettuce of unknown origin; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0494): Mercury in greater amberjack from Greece; distributed to Italy.

  • Allergy Alert: Al Baghdadi Food Inc. (Hazel Park, MI) recalls All Baghdadi Food Fully Cooked Potato Chop Middle Eastern Brand Mashed Potato Stuffed with Beef Filling Artificially Colored (pkgs containing 12 pieces; Est 44182; Produced between Aug. 16, 2011 and April 2, 2012), due to the presence of undeclared soy and milk. The recalled products were sold to retail stores, institutions and wholesale establishments in Arizona, Illinois and Michigan.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture and of Health ordered the recall of raw milk sold in plastic bottles and raw milk cheese (Bearing date March 25, 2012) from Jersey Hollow Farm (Kutztown, PA) after an independent lab confirmed the presence of Salmonella in products from the dairy, according to a report on Food Safety News. No illness have been linked to this recall.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Prospect Enterprises, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) that a January/February 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility, American Fish & Seafood Company (Sacramento, CA) revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Plenus Group Inc. (Lowell, MA) that a February/March 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Meherrin Agricultural & Chemical Co. (Severn, NC) that a November/December 2011 inspection of the company’s peanut butter processing plant (Hampton Farms Industrial Plant, Severn, NC) revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Protica, Inc. (Whitehall, PA) that a September/October 2011 inspection of the company’s facility revealed significant violations from the requirements of the Acidified Foods Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Distribucion Y Representaciones Comerciales S.A. (Santiago, Chile) that a November 2011 inspection of the company’s juice processing facility revealed serious violations of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 120, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • Outbreak Alert: According to Mary Rothschild of Food Safety News, FDA and CDC are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly poisoning that may be associated with the consumption of sushi. Ninety people have been sickened in 19 states and the District of Columbia as of yesterday.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Whole Foods Market Canada, Inc. recalls Foodmatch Divina Cornichons (various weights; All sell-by dates up to and including 2012.04.27; UPC begins with 0 235048), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario and British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Les Aliments Johnvince Foods recalls Les Aliments Johnvince Julienne Soup Mix (750g; Lot 1 694 1; UPC 0 55144 43404 4) and Stock & Barrel Julienne Soup Mix (750g; Lot 1 709 1; UPC 0 64777 38133 5), due to the presence of undeclared egg. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Allergy Alert Update: Bramic Sales updates its earlier recall of Koh-Kae Coated Peanuts (various flavors; CFIA Recall Reference Numbers 7047 and 7051) to include all lot/date codes, because the products may contain undeclared milk.
  • Food Recall: Bramic Sales recalls Koh-Kae Peanuts Coffee Flavour Coated (265g; All lot codes; UPC 8 852023 664255), due to the presence of chemical additives. The recalled product was distributed in Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): WP Meat A/S recalls Beef Hamburger, Minced Beef, Minced Pork, and Minced Pork and Veal (various fat content; various sizes; Best before 1/4, 2/4 and 4/4-2012), after a routine sample of the meat tested positive for Salmonella.
