Outbreak/Illness Investigations

USA (Update): FDA and CDC continue to investigate a series of illnesses associated with eating Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, and Gummies. As of June 17, 2024, a total of 26 illnesses have been reported from 16 states including AL (1), AZ (6), CA (1), IN (3), KY (2), MD (1), MN (1), MO (1), MT (1), NV (1), NJ (1), NY (1), NC (1), PA (1), SC (3), and TN (1). Twenty-five (25) of the 26 people have reported seeking medical care; 16 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Chang and Son Enterprises, Inc. that the company’s mung bean and soybean sprouts are adulterated within the meaning of section 402(a)(4) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act), 21 U.S.C. § 342(a)(4), in that they have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health. The warning was based on findings of Listeria monocytogenes in environmental samples and in several product samples collected over a period of time..

Food Safety Recall: Hudson Harvest recalls Hudson Harvest Tomato Basil Sauce (16-ounce glass jars; Lot 1042426; UPC 683720301567) due to possible underprocessing.

Food Safety Recall: Clasen Quality Chocolate Inc. recalls multiple bulk chocolate products destined for use in various confectionary items and ice creams due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Moore Family Cheese LLC recalls Moore Family Farms and Creamery Cheddar Cheese Curds (1-lb plastic bags; Date code 5/13/2024; Expiry 6/3/2024) due to elevated coliform and E. coli counts

Allergy Alert: Best Express Foods Inc. recalls Universal Bakery brand Organic Aussie Bites (850g; All packages bearing a “gluten free” claim; UPC 7 31216 10398 7) due to undeclared gluten.

Food Safety Recall: Pattison Food Group recalls Western Family brand Pot Barley (450g; Lot 33061D; Best before 2024 NO 02AD; UPC 0 62639 36405 2) due to insect infestation.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

UK (Update): The UK Health Security Agency reports 211 confirmed cases of E. coli O145 infections as of June 11, 2024. Outbreak cases have been reported in England (147), Wales (27), Scotland (35), and Northern Ireland (2). Epidemiological investigations have narrowed down the likely source of the outbreak to “…a small number of salad leaf products that have been used in sandwiches, wraps, subs and rolls.

USA: CDC is investigating an outbreak of 15 cases of Salmonella Cotham in nine states. The illnesses are linked to contact with pet bearded dragons. Four of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized.
