Outbreak/Illness Investigations

USA: CDC is investigating eight Salmonella outbreaks linked to backyard poultry. The current total of confirmed cases is 513, reported from 42 states and Puerto Rico. One person in Washington state has died, and 134 have been hospitalized. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the victims are under 5 years of age. Outbreak strains include Salmonella Enteritidis, Indiana, Infantis, Mbandaka, and Saintpaul.

DENMARK: The Statens Serum Institut is investigating an outbreak of 25 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium (sequence type 34) that began May 17th. The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined.

ESTONIA: The Estonian Health Board reports five cases of Salmonella Stanley ST2045 as part of a multi-country outbreak linked to instant noodles.

USA: CDC and FDA are investigating an outbreak of three cases of infant botulism linked to consumption of NARA Organics brand powdered infant formula.

MULTINATIONAL (Update): The European Centre for Disease Control continues to monitor an outbreak of Salmonella Stanley infections that has sickened as many as 107 individuals (83 confirmed and 24 pending). Cases have been reported in Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Epidemiological investigations indicate a suspected link to chicken-flavoured instant noodles and/or processed chicken products.
