Consumers allege Purina products behind pet illnesses/deaths

Dozens of pet owners have posted reports on social media about their dogs and cats falling sick after eating a Purina Pro Plan pet food.

As of January 4, 2024, the public Facebook group, Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time, has received 197 anecdotal reports of sick animals, including 151 dogs and 46 cats.

Fifty-one (51) animals have died.

The following is a small sampling of stories that have been posted on Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time over the last month.

I have 5 sick dogs on Purina pro plan. Severe diarrhea and dehydration. One dog was hospitalized on Friday and then another today which led me to think it had to be the feed. My 2 dogs who are raw fed are perfectly fine. Purina Pro plan adult.

We were feeding Purina Pro Plan to our 3 rottweilers. One of which lost an entire litter of puppies and is waiting official diagnosis of PLE. Surgery for biopsies in 2 weeks. Severe diarrhea, vomiting and loss of litter where devastating for us and our girl.

I want to share my story of Gracie Lou, a 12 year old pit bull boxer mix with the spirit of a 3 year old puppy.

We were almost out of her food on Christmas Eve so I ran to the local grocery store and grabbed a bag of purina lamb and rice adult. She doesn’t usually eat purina, I actually just grabbed whatever (It was Christmas Eve, there was A LOT going on).

We had fed her a little chicken and brown rice on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning with the last of her of her old food.

Christmas Day about 4:30 she had her first bowl of purina. 2-3 hours later she had her first seizure. She has NO health problems except arthritis. She has NEVER had a seizure. She was running around all day, playing with her toys, being her totally normal crazy self she always is. We were naturally terrified and had no clue what was happening. We journaled everything and watched her like a hawk all night and she finally got back to almost normal by early afternoon on 12/26.

On 12/26 around 4:30ish she had another bowl of purina and literally 2-3 hours later had her second seizure. We rushed her to the emergency vet in Annapolis and without having an MRI we won’t know if it’s a brain tumor or not. We cannot afford an MRI right now. We also just took the word of the doctor saying it’s the age and these things happen. The dr said the labs looked fine (I’m not sure what they test for) and that without something else to rule it out they will treat her for epilepsy due to a possible brain tumor and she has to be on medication for the rest of her life. They gave us seizure medication and sent us on our way.

excerpted from a longer story posted December 30, 2023

In at least one instance, Purina has offered to cover the pet owner’s veterinary bills.

So since Trinitys seizure I’ve been in contact with Purina. The only change since her ultrasound & bloodwork in November was a food change I went from Purina Brightminds to Sensitive skin & stomach Salmon Senior.

I read a post on here about a couple dogs having seizures also on this food but adult version.

Last week Purina asked me for all information about Trinity, my vets & copies of my vet bills.

Today they called me to verify all information. Told me they are sending a check to cover my vet bills & coupons for food reimbursement. They never said yes there is a problem with that particular food but were super nice & offered all help. They also stated any future vet bills on Trinity I can submit & they will cover.

FDA is aware of reports of pet illnesses and is in the process of evaluating those reports.

In response to our request for comment, we received the following statement:

“We encourage pet owners or their veterinarians to submit reports of illness or other adverse events associated with pet food directly to FDA by following the instructions on this page: How to Report a Pet Food Complaint.”

FDA spokesperson, January 4, 2024

The FDA relies heavily on reports from pet owners and veterinarians to alert them to safety issues with pet foods.

If your pet is sick or has died, and you suspect the pet food to be the cause, please ask your veterinarian to file an Adverse Event report with the FDA.

Whether or not a veterinarian agrees to file a report, pet owners can file directly with the FDA. Prepare to make your report by assembling as much information about your pet’s symptoms, any lab reports (eg., blood work), and whatever information you have on the specific product(s) you have fed your pet. This includes brand and variety names, lot code, expiration date, and bar code information, all of which can be found on the package.

There are two options for filing, which are explained on the FDA web page, How to Report a Pet Food Complaint

Option 1: Contact the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator for your state by telephone (in the case of California, there are separate coordinators for Northern and Southern California). The list of telephone numbers is available at: Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

Option 2: File on-line using the FDA Safety Reporting Portal. Simply click on the “Report as Guest” button and follow the step-by-step directions.

  1. Few days ago, I purchased Purina One (dog) 14kg bag only to find it was completely infested with live bugs and dozens were crawling in the closet.
Upon a closer look inside the bag, many of the pellets were somewhat white.
As I tore them in half, they all contained small, what seemed to be dormant, worms.

Called Purina to report this and also cited the various articles suck as this one. They stated it was all a smearing campaign…
Luckily, I took pictures and videos as proof.

    Be vigilant folks.

  2. After reading this article and several comments, I am now believing that my dog got sick from the Purina Pro Plus (PPP) I was feeding him, purple bag with Weimaraner photo. I live in Philadelphia Pa and I have a 3 year old Shiloh Shepard, about 110 lbs, very healthy. I feed him homemade food, a mixture of chicken, salmon, rice, and different vegetables and used PPP as a filler to give him extra food due to his size. In December of 2023, not sure exact date, he started getting sick, vomiting, diarrhea, lost about 10 lbs in a week, and lethargic. Couldn’t figure to what was wrong, vet was baffled as well, nothing came back in any of the testing that she did, the illness lasted until the end of the first week of new year. I made some changes to his wet food, stopped the dry PPP food all together, he started getting better and putting weight back on. Just as a precaution I threw my PPP away, bought a new bag and now he seems fine. Im not saying it was Purina’s fault but after reading this article I’m pretty sure we got a bad batch of Purina Pro Plus food. I am getting away from this food, gonna look into making my own dry food now, will find something safe in the mean time. I never made any claims against Purina, I’m not going to, I’m just staying away from the company. Just think it’s odd that all of these dogs were getting sick in the same time line all over the country.

    1. I’m so glad your dog got better. My dog was very sick and she had seizures after eating the food. She held on for a month but had to be euthanized at 7 1/2 years old in April. She was fine before eating that last batch of food and I hate Purina and I wish I never fed her that crap.

  5. Wow. I stopped giving my two 8 year old cats Purina Pro Plan+ and Fancy Feast when I took over their care around half a year ago. Before I switched their food, for years my family and I were concerned about their chronic GI problems, persistent allergies, and constant colds and sinus infections they had to deal with. Yes, they still do have allergies and are sensitive girls in general, but ever since I switched the only time they’ve thrown up was when they had a hairball.

Obviously there are multiple factors and it’s not like I went through every possible variable in their diet: food sensitivities, reduced carb load (Pro Plan hard food has a disturbing amount of carbs and you can only find out how much there is if you use a calculator online), cutting out any foods that contain a significant amount of vegetable products, feeding foods with human grade/as close to human grade as possible ingredients, and so on. Regardless of whether Purina and other big brand foods cause acute health problems or not, their products still contain ingredients that should be avoided. These diets are all a sure-fire way to end up with chronic health problems like digestion issues, food sensitivity symptoms, obesity, diabetes, etc.

The only con to switching is the cost. Yet, at the same time, my cats don’t need to have more than their usual vet visits. How do the financial, pet health, and emotional costs really compare in the end?

She also had eye discharge so bad I had to clean every day. I started preparing healthy human grade food at home, and her anxiety left in 3 days and her eyes cleared up. They are making animals sick so you have to take them to vets, which they are also over vaccinating them and breaking down their immune system so they are more sick, which keeps you going back putting money in their pockets. STOP you vet visits and your pet will be more healthy.

  8. I found out years ago that Purina and maybe all pet food manufacturers who have other products besides food, maybe under other company names incorporated, use the very same stainless steel vats to process dry,and wet pet food, insecticides, fertilizers, and other products, they just clean and wash them out,I had this verified by Purina when i wrote them a letter years after my precious large wolf shepherd mix dog died of stomach cancer at age 9. I was poor had back injury little money, couldn’t work,no income, had to buy bag of small buckshot size kibble, ripped bag half price no return, he refused to eat it,smelled like chemicals, whined, but i made him eat it,had nothing else, he choked coughed,I ended up throwing it out, a year later he died. I researched found out same vats used, and maybe careless workers didn’t clean vats before changing to pet food. If buying any pet food save bag or cut out processing data on bag save it for proof,a year ago I found inch long sharp pointed plastic in bottom of 40 pound bag dry dog food.
Contacted manufacturer, they sent package for sharp piece for inspection, and later sent coupons for several bags of dog food.
I now make dog food for my melinois,it’s better food that some humans eat.its cheaper too, many ways of getting meat, veggies, rice, sweet potatoes free or low cost. Research, save iformation.eat healthy.

  9. If there is a problem with the food, purina will absolutely issue a recall. Most of these are coincidences or are other problems coinciding with the food. Think about how many thousands of dogs there are on this food and they’re fine. This article is just going to bring out the self taught know it alls ( Google scholars) who will start dispensing unqualified nutrition advice.

I did, however, have 3 dogs die of kidney failure within months of each other from Ole Roy dog food from Wal-Mart. After researching it, there were dozens of law suits filed against Walmart for their dog food. Maybe coincidence, but I doubt it. My vet recommends Purina.

From what I can tell most of these people did a switch from what they were feeding to Proplan with not doing a partial of the old dog food to proplan of course they diarrhea you can’t do that. And the guy above whose dog died at 9 with cancer well Shepard can be prone to cancer. I lost a 10yr old to bone cancer. Was that caused by her dog food I don’t think so.

I get chicken breast, cube it, cook it in water with some rice and have enough for about a week. I got a multivitamin for adult dogs on chewy and add that to his dinner bowl. It’s easy, and honestly cheaper than buying a 60 dollar bag of crap food every month that’s just going to make him sick. Hope this helps!

        1. I also make my dog’s food. I use my instant pot and put it on high pressure cook for about 40 minutes. I add 2-3 inches of water and add my meat base (usually frozen chicken, salmon or ground turkey. I then add something orange (sweet potatoes, carrots or pumpkin), brown rice, a bag of frozen green beans or other green veggie like broccoli or zucchini squash, and a fruit-usually apples or frozen blueberries. Cook on high for about 43 mins. And all done. You can store in individual bags or containers in the freezer. If you refrigerate only, you would need to use it within 3-4 days.

I boil a whole chicken, add carrots, sweet potatoes, lentils and sometimes brown rice and peas or spinach. I portion out the servings in freezer bags with the broth and all. She LOVES IT. His kidney levels were high and he had to be hospitalized. I took him home after 4 days and he wasn’t doing any better 😔

    1. All cats will eventually die of kidney failure unless they die of other issues beforehand. 14/15 years old is very long, good life. When kitties get sick it tends to happen quickly as they are very stoic animals. You won’t know if they are in pain or sick until they are at their absolute worst. I wouldn’t put kidney failure on pet food. But seizures? That could be.

    2. Hi there, my sweet almost 15 yr old kitty died in October from kidney disease and my other cat died a year ago with the same thing. After watching the cat expert Jackson Galaxy, I can directly link it to her eating dry kibble her entire life. Since then I have fed a combination of high quality kibble with wet food to my cat per Galaxy’s recommendation. He said it’s better to feed a cat at least the lowest quality wet food than to feed a cat only dry food because it’s so dehydrating to them and cause kidney issues eventually.

After reading this I fed her boiled chicken and rice past two days and no throwing up no blood in stool today and she is showing more energy. I’m going to just stop using it. It’s frustrating because I stopped using the Victors two months ago because of their recall. I don’t know what’s safe anymore.

Next was in 2022, which was my dog, who was almost 13 yo. And just this past Dec 2023, I lost my pure bred havenese. She was only 10 yo. She had no health issues. Took her to the vet with a week of her not being herself, her kidneys completely failed and she had pancreatitis according to the vet. Without doing further testing, they believe that there was an underlying cause possibly cancer. I personally don’t think she had cancer. It just happened so fast. She was not on Purina dog food. She was on Buffalo Blue, as well as, my dog that I loss in 2022.

X-rays showed 2 very large cancerous tumors attached to her stomach and inoperable. Never whined or anything. Took her home to love on her for a couple days then had to put her down. Couldn’t let her starve to death. It could be cancer and you may not know it until it’s too late. So sorry for your loss!

I switched his food to Purina One lamb and rice and he’s doing great. He even likes his food!!!! The pro plan for sensitive skin and stomache would have killed him if I didnt change his food. He never adjusted to the food, had gastric upset and loose stools then developed itch and started chewing paws.
I switched back gradually to Purina and he’s fine, all is back to normal. I’m surprised because first ingredient is corn and you know it’s gmo but he tolerates the food very well. I add some top grade sardines and organic eggs here and there but I’m sticking with Purina cause he does the best on it.
They have a long track record so obviously it working for this rescue dog.

    1. Why would you think Purina is the best and most trusted? Because they have the most commercials on tv? Do some homework! Just like human food, they are required to post their nutritional content on the package. There are numerous better kibbles on the market than purina. Purina is essentially a grocery store brand that has bought its way into pet stores like Petco and PetSmart. I too used to feed my dogs iams but when they started having health issues I realized I am was basically on par with purina. I switched them to Wellness and they are now much better. People cannot believe they are 12 years old because they appear so healthy and are so physically able and active. I wish I had fed them Wellness their entire lives.

Throwing up and loose bowels. Also very weak. I talked to a vet at Chewy and was advised to change from Pet One to Pro Plan for kittens. After a week of slowly adding the Pro Plan food into the old one, they were ready to be fed only Pro Plan Kitten – wet and dry.

They’re almost a year old now. They seem ok, but they don’t seem to like the wet food so much. Hardly ever finish it. After reading about the Purina issues, I’m thinking of going back to WERUVA kitten, then to the cat food. I fed my last two babies WERUVA for 13 years. They both lived to almost 15 years old. They always loved that cat food. The reason I didn’t start these new babies on it was the high price of WERUVA. That company is family-owned and I think, at least, is high quality. I won’t skimp on these babies if there’s any chance whatsoever that their health is being put at risk by the food they eat.

Better to be safe than sorry these days when greed rather than quality is the driving force of many companies!

Good luck to us all with this problem, especially the precious Animals!

  21. Thanks the universe somebody write this!!! I had my first cat on last April 2022 and I started with fancy feast kitten canned food and when she had her 4 months started having GI problems. She suffered from pain, constant diarrhea and vomiting episodes for one year. We visited several vet clinics and emergency vet clinics for months and nobody had a diagnose just GI but nobody says WHY. My cat passed away a year and 5 month later. Last year I adopted another kitten and I started the weaning process with fancy feast wet kitten food from purina and surprisingly the same issue. The answers I was waiting for more than a year just came to me: IT WAS THAT FOOD THE PROBLEM! The day I switch to homemade food my kitten stoppee the 5 diharreas per day. NOW WHO IS GONNA PAY FOR MY DEAD CAT AND ALL THE MONEY SPEND IN VET BILLS????

    1. I have had cats on Fancy feast for 8 years, no problems, they love it, they won’t eat any other kind. They are totally happy and very healthy, they are still very active, they eat a can 3oz. 2 times a day and also the dry food, they will not eat the other brands, you might consider other issues, like contaminated water or other health issues in the home, cats are notorious hunters.

  22. I fed my Australian Shepherd Purina for a few years. During that time she developed a seizure disorder, and most recently she developed an Autoimmune condition called Panniculitis. She is a medical alert and mobility service dog for me, but now she will be on immunosuppressants for the rest of her life. She is only 7, but I fear because I fed her Purina for so long, she will continue to have issues. I obviously stopped feeding her Purina shortly after the Panniculitis began and I am angry with myself for not doing it sooner. She looks 2 years younger now that I cook for her with ingredients I purchase.

  23. Just went through this but with purina one plus large puppy. Spent $ 246 on medicine and vet visit. My dog was vomiting and having diarrhea lethargic. He’s 10 months old and had to have fluids everything. Dr suspected ulcer my husband had gave him ham prior to that so we thought maybe ham. Well we do the medicine he seems to be doing OK a week later my husband had to grab the dog food from the store for me. We were out fed the dog that night the next morning all over again puking and diarrhea. The only difference was the opening of a brand new bag of dog food but the same brand. I said it has got to be the dog food I googled reviews most good but then that one bad comment described the same situation as I was having the guy said his dog had an overload of vit d that it was Toxic to the dog caused by the food. I switched dog food and have been boiling chicken now and so far we re doing okay please God help it stay good!

  24. As a vet tech with 30 years in the field, I was around during the first pet food recall many years ago. In my conversation with a scientist at the CDC I was told that no pet food on the market is free of issues. Her suggestion was to feed your pets either a mixture of, or switch up their food occasionally which goes against all teachings, but she said even the High cost holistic foods and the high quality foods all have a problem at some point. Personally, I feed my lg dogs benefit, my small dog gets blue buffalo, and the cats get meow mix and Purina one. While I don’t mix the cat foods it’s available in different areas of the house and I don’t have any issues.

  25. I use the purina proplan prescription EN gastrointestinal through the vet. We’ve never had a problem. Might be different as it’s prescription not from a pet store
That’s scary stuff. Hope those are removed from the stores

    2. We were feeding 4 Health to our 10 year old spaniel. Started with bloody diarrhea, stomach in knots, vomiting and just not himself. Our vet prescribed Purina Pro Plan EN both wet and dry to our small dog recently. We started feeding to our spaniel the dry the beginning of this week and Thursday he died. My small pup isn’t acting herself so not feeding that anymore. I just don’t know what to feed my little girl!

    1. My 9yo GSP was only fed Blue Buffalo until their recall. Since then she has been fed Purino Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach exclusively. No issues at all. She loves it and still has the energy of a puppy.

  27. My two year old German shepherd fell ill also after we had opted to switch her from taste of the wild high prairie to purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach thankfully we only fed her the one bag but thats all it took she became very lethargic diarrhea didnt want to play or do anything and definitely wasn’t acting like our normal retta and the only change we had made was her food so without hesitation we switched her right back to her taste of the wild high prairie and our retta girl is back to her normal rotten self! The the lord!

I am on every recall or food issue report and this resource is advertising other foods..Yoy do not listen to anything that is advertising in this manner, it is bogus!! Get facts not gossip.

      1. My mom just said something like this. We have fed our animals purina one since the mid to late 90s. Purina one was recommended by our vet, who also told us to never trust someone talking bad about one food while trying to push you towards a food they are trying to sell.

    2. Make your own food, chicken & vegetables, sweet potatoes and salmon, ground beef & potatoes and mixed vegetables actually it’s cheaper in the long run, just make it a head and you can even freeze it

      1. You cannot even buy ground beef that is safe. My dogs cannot have poultry and fish due to allergies…. I can barely find safe food anymore for me!

I agree, started making food for a small miniature schnauzer that had diabetes,no sugar no salt, veggies, cooked meat,of various types certain grains, it’s cheaper and healthier, tastier, and less is needed as commercial pet food has mostly fillers of corn, I still make my new dog his food every day.research on line veternarians and nutritionists

  28. Omg I knew it was purina pro plan! Soon after changing our pitbulls diet we noticed a change in his behavior. Decreased energy, saddness and eventually he was so sick he did not want to go out to potty! About two weeks of being on purina pro plan he had a major seizure! No previous history! We took him to the vet and they could not find anything wrong. We took him off purina pro plan immediately because I was pretty sure the food was the cause of this! Soon after he was back to his normal self! He has not had any seizures since we changed from purina pro plan!
