United States
ILLNESS INVESTIGATION UPDATE: As of December 19, 2023, the FDA has received 69 adverse event complaints/reports associated with elevated lead levels in Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches. The CDC has received reports of 67 confirmed cases, 122 probable cases, and 16 suspected cases for a total of 205 cases from 33 different states through their reporting structure. There may be some overlap in the cases reported to the two agencies. The FDA confirmed the present of extremely high levels of lead in the cinnamon used to produce these applesauce pouches during the course of its on-site inspection of the Ecuadoran company that manufactured the products. All of the implicated products have been recalled, and the investigation into the source of the lead found in the cinnamon is continuing.
