  • Animal Feed Safety Recall: PMI Nutrition International recalls certain varieties of AquaMax™, Mazuri® and LabDiet® feed products, due to the potential for elevated levels of vitamin D. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled products were manufactured at the Richmond, Indiana feed plant and distributed nationwide in the USA and exported to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Mexico, Cambodia, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile, and the United Kingdom from April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012.

Canada

  • Animal Feed Safety Recall: PMI Nutrition International recalls certain varieties of AquaMax™, Mazuri® and LabDiet® feed products, due to the potential for elevated levels of vitamin D. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled products were manufactured at the Richmond, Indiana feed plant and distributed nationwide in the USA and exported to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Mexico, Cambodia, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile, and the United Kingdom from April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012.
  • Natural Health Product Safety Advisory: Fu Fang Zaoren Jiaonang (Manufactured by Dong Phuong Trading Co), an unauthorized natural health product promoted for anxiety and/or insomnia, has been removed from sale after testing by Health Canada confirmed the presence of the ingredient L-tetrahydropalmatine that could cause damage to vital organs such as the liver, most notably in pregnant women. The product was sold at Fu Ji Herbal, a retail store in Markham, Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Aldi recalls Whole Fresh Chicken, Chilled (Product of Germany; Best before 10-07-2012), after Campylobacter is detected in the product. The recalled product was sold in Aldi stores in Zealand.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to buy or consume the slimming product known as Conting Qianweisu Slimming Herbs Capsule, as it may contain the banned Western pharmaceutical ingredient sibutramine. The implicated product was purchased outside of Hong Kong.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0999): Undeclared sulphite in champagne from France; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1000): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen poultry meat preparation from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1002): Mercury in swordfish from Spain; distributed to Italy.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (New Zealand): Waikato Valley Chocolate Ltd. recalls Waikato Valley Forest Fruit Chocolate Bar (200g block; Best before 18.12.2013), because the product contains undeclared almonds. The recalled product was sold exclusively through The Warehouse stores nationwide, between June 26th and July 12th, 2012.

The product was previous recalled in October 2011 within the USA and from Australia (without FDA knowledge). The recalled Ear Lubricant products were distributed hospitals, health professionals, and retailers nationwide and to Belgium, Greece, Canada, Thailand, Australia, Panama, Singapore, Russian Federation, Ireland, The Philippines, France, Korea, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Sweden.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Melinda’s Biscotti (Sidney, BC) recalls Melinda’s Biscotti brand Almond Biscotti (240g pkgs; UPC 8 75281 00030 4; BEST BEFORE code of NOV 2012, DEC 2012, or JAN 2013), due to the presence of undeclared wheat and milk. The recalled product was distributed only in British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Pan Asia Food Co. Ltd. recalls Lotte Choco Pie (168g; Best before 13.11.2012 and 12.02.2013; UPC 8 801062 161881) and Lotte Choco Pie (336g; Best before 14.11.2011, 03.02.2012, 12.11.2012, and 06.02.2013; UPC 8 801062 160709), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts. The recalled products were sold in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (BC) recalls Lotte Choco Pie (336g; Code 13.02.2012 B4 12.02.2013; UPC 8 801062 160709), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts. The recalled products were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): La Société Gabriel Coulet SA recalls Cora/Winny brands of Roquefort cheese (150g; Lot 120406156; Best before 08/09/2012, 29/09/2012 and 06/10/2012), due to contamination with Escherichia coli O26:H11, a shigatoxin-producing strain of E. coli. The recalled cheese was sold in Match, Smatch and Match Food and More stores.
  • Food Safety Alert (UK): BBC reports that trade in Ribble Estuary cockles has been banned until further notice by the West Lancashire Environmental Health Department, after cockles from the estuary were found to contain dangerous levels of E. coli and other fecal coliform bacteria.

United States

  • Food Safety Alert: FDA warns consumers not to purchase or consume any products from the Mexicali Cheese Corp (Woodhaven, NY) after Listeria monocytogenes was found in finished product samples. Under a May 1, 2012, consent decree of permanent injunction, Mexicali Cheese was required by a court order to stop manufacturing and distributing any articles of food until it completed FDA-approved measures to correct food safety deficiencies, decontaminate its facility and take other steps needed to comply with the law. The company did not comply with these requirements.
  • Food Safety Recall: Valley Fine Foods Company, Inc. recalls Signature Café Spaghetti & Meatballs (30-oz/850g microwaveable tray; UPC 0-21130-06875-3; Use Components By dates of Jun 30 12, Jul 01 12, Jul 05 12, Jul 07 12, Jul 08 12, Jul 11 12, Jul 14 12, Jul 18 12, Jul 19 12, Jul 21 12, Jul 25 12, Jul 27 12, Jul 28 12, Aug 01 12, Aug 05 12, Aug 07 12, Aug 08 12 and Aug 11 12), because the product contains meatballs supplied by Buona Vita, Inc. (Bridgeton, NJ) and may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold in the refrigerated deli area from May 26, 2012 through July 9, 2012 exclusively at Safeway and Safeway-owned stores throughout the U.S., including Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Vons.
  • Food Safety Alert (Rhode Island): The Rhode Island Department of Health advises consumers not to eat any bakery products purchased at Bristol Bakery or any products that may have originated at the facility after multiple violations were found during an inspection of the establishment by inspectors from the Office of Food Protection. Bristol Bakery has been ordered to remain closed until such time as the facility passes a re-inspection and is approved to reopen.
  • Food Safety/Outbreak Alert: The Rhode Island Department of Health advises food establishments to avoid using or selling any shellfish harvested from areas in the Town of Oyster Bay (NY), due to an illness outbreak caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the shellfish. Three people who ate raw or partially cooked shellfish in Nassau County became ill; an additional five illnesses were reported by three other states that received shellfish harvested in Oyster Bay.
  • Outbreak Alert (Wisconsin): Food Safety News reports that at least 200 people contracted Norovirus after swimming in Lake Wazee (Wisconsin) on July 4th. One child was hospitalized.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Costco Wholesale Canada recalls Lilydale Chicken Whole Chicken Fryer (Best before July 21st, 2012), Lilydate Chicken Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast (Best before July 21st, 2012) and Lilydale Chicken Split Tip Removed Chicken Wings (Best before July 20th, 2012), due to a possible temperature abuse issue. The affected products were sold only at the Rocky View (Alberta) Costco Wholesale warehouse.
  • Food Safety Recall: Henlong Market recalls Chining Boiled White Nuts – Gingko (397g; Best before 30-06-2013; Code 3200/01023 926; UPC 6 901383 002060), due to an unspecified microbiological issue. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia.

  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (Australia): Essential Image recalls Take-home Teeth Whitening Kit (no identifying numbers or markings), because the product contains concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in excess of the recognized safe limit of 6%. The recalled product was sold nationally directly to consumers via the Essential Image website.
