Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Upper 49th Imports Inc. recalls Designer Whey Protein Powder – Chocolate (908g; Imported; Code #4211165186B 11:16 ENJOY BY: JUN 2013), due to the presence of undeclared gluten. The recalled product was distributed at the retail level across Canada.
  • Allergy Alert: Israel’s Judaica Centre, aka Israel Book and Gift (Toronto, ON), recalls Lin’s Farm brand Pure Honey (30g, 130g, 250g & 375g; Lot Code BB 06/2015), Lin’s Farm brand 3 Healthy Delights (3 x 30g; Lot code BB 06/2015), and Lin’s Farm brand Holy Land Tastes (4 x 115g; Lot code BB 06/2015), due to the presence of sulphonamide antibiotic residue. The recalled products were distributed in the Greater Toronto area.
  • Allergy Alert Update: Ilana Robyn Foods Ltd. (Toronto, ON) amends its earlier recall of Sweets From The Earth brand products to include additional formats of the affected lot codes. The recall was initiated due to the presence of undeclared milk in the products, which include Dairy Free Wild Blueberry Cheesecake, Spiced Carrot Cake, Dairy Free Chocolate Cheesecake, and Gluten Free & Dairy Free Espresso Cheesecake. The products have been distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. There have been three reported reactions associated with the consumption of these products.
  • Food Safety Recall: Asian Food Centre Stores recall Pachranga Foods brand Amla Pickle-Gooseberry Pickle in Oil (800g; Best before 15/07/2013; Batch #7611), due to microbiological spoilage. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Advisory: Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. advises customers that Boneless Pork Loin Centre & Rib and Boneless Pork Loin Full Case, sold in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba Costco stores between February 14th and February 16th, inclusive are labeled with an incorrect Best Before date. The vacuum packed pork loins bearing a Production date of February 1, 2012 should be consumed by March 2nd, 2012 to avoid any food safety or quality issues.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: New Food Classics (Burlington, ON) recalls Country Morning Beef Burgers (1kg; UPC 0 57316 02941 6; Lots 52841 EST 761, 62841 EST 761, 72841 EST 761, and 82841 EST 761) and no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes (2.27kg; UPC 0 60383 01321 9; Lot #BB 2012 AL 10 EST 761), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of this product. The Country Morning Beef Burgers were distributed to COOP and TGP grocery stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwest Territories. The no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes were distributed by Loblaws to Cash&Carry/RCWC Ontario Corporate, Extra Foods, Freshmart, Loblaws Great Food, no frills, RCWC West Corporate, Real Canadian Superstore, Value-mart, Your Independent Grocer, Zehrs, and Zehrs Great Food in Ontario, and to Extra Foods, Extra Foods no frills, Real Canadian Superstore West Corporate, Shop Easy/SuperValu, Superstore, and Your Independent Grocer in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): Leaf Italia S.r.l. recalls Sperlari Granperle fondenti con granella di torrone (160g; Lot #L11284, L11285, L11287, L11294, L11296, and L11300), due to possible contamination with foreign material.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): EDEKA/Franconia Good recalls Meat Sausage Pieces 1/2 (sold at Deli counters; Best before 03/03/2012), Meat Sausage Ring (sold at Deli counters; Best before 03/03/2012) and Good Deli Franken-Meat Sausage (500g; Best before 28/02/2012), because the products may be contaminated with small metal particles.

United States

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Recall: McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalls Infants’ TYLENOL® Oral Suspension, 1 oz Grape (UPC 300450122308; Lot Nos. BIL0U00, BIL0V00, BIL3500, BJL2D00, BJL2E00, BJL2T00, BJL2U00) after receiving a small number of complaints from consumers who reported difficulty using the Infants’ TYLENOL® SimpleMeasure™ dosing system. SimpleMeasure™ includes a dosing syringe, which a parent or caregiver inserts into a protective cover, or “flow restrictor,” at the top of the bottle to measure the proper dose. In some cases, the flow restrictor was pushed into the bottle when inserting the syringe. Children’s TYLENOL® products are intended for children two years of age and older and remain available. Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Ilana Robyn Foods Ltd. (Toronto, ON) recalls Sweets From The Earth Spiced Carrot Cake (100g; UPC 855144001037; Best before dates up to and including Feb 27, 2012), because the product contains undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: I.M.U.R. Chef (Saint-Laurent, QC) recalls Bean & Barley Soup, Cabbage Soup, Pea Soup, Matza Ball Soup, and Chicken Soup, due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The Matza Ball Soup and Chicken Soup also contain undeclared egg.
  • Outbreak Alert: Peel County (Ontario) Public Health is warning patrons of Harvey’s restaurant at 6430 Erin Mills Parkway, Mississauga that an employee working at that location was diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Consumers who purchased food from this Harvey’s outlet on January 28th or 29th, or February 4th or 5th may have been exposed to Hepatitis A.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Rieber & Son Denmark A/S recalls Rema1000 Remoulade (400g, Lot #L33; Expiry 1/6-2012), due to inadvertent mislabeling, which does not declared the presence of onions, cabbage and spices.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Vitaline SA recalls CEVAL Healthfood brand Fibryn Biscuits au son sans sucre (Lot #118011; Best if used by 30/08/2012), due to visible mold growth.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Nordic Egg Ltd. recalls Whole Eggs, Grade A, Medium (53-63g; Product of Poland; Expiry 28/2-2012; individual eggs stamped with the code 3PL30221304), because Salmonella enteritidis was found in a sample of the eggs.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Messrs. Hans Adler OHG recalls Black Forest Garlic Sausage (approx 900g ring; Best before 03/11/2012), due to the presence of a metallic foreign body.
  • Food Safety Alert (Greece): Evrofarma SA announces the temporary suspension of production of Promel yogurt, to allow for investigation of complaints of mold growth in Promel 2% yogurt. The company is cooperating with EFET to determine and correct the source of the problem.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Denmark): Abigo Pharma A/S recalls Bronikyl Food Supplement, produced by Propharma A/S (250ml; Best before 12-2012), because the supplement contains non-permitted paraben preservatives.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0249): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled chicken from France; distributed to France and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0250): Imazalil in oranges from Morocco; distributed to Sweden.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0253): Unauthorized sildenafil thiono analogue in food supplement from Greece; distributed to Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0255): Escherichia coli in frozen pangasius fillets from Vietnam; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0256): Salmonella Weltevreden in fresh pre-packed acacia from Thailand; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0257): Norovirus in oysters from France; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0260): Excessive sulphite in frozen shrimps from China, via Italy; distributed to Malta.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0261): Absence of health mark on loose smoked whole chickens from the United Kingdom; distributed to Ireland.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0262): Salmonella Soerenga in processed animal protein from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0263): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked trout fillet from Turkey; distributed to the Netherlands.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert (Philippines): The Philippines Department of Health warns the public that some lipsticks may contain excessive levels of lead.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an acute gastroenteritis outbreak that has affected 22 children at a residential child care center in Wan Chai. The outbreak victims range in age from 3 to 20 months. A one-year-old boy required hospitalization, but has since been discharged.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): At least 100 people who attended a wedding party in Baba Hari Dass Nagar (Southwest Delhi) were hospitalized with food poisoning symptoms. The victims complained of vomiting, headache and stomachache.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Coles Deli Spicy Capsicum Dip (200g plastic container; Use by 19 MAR 12), due to the presence of undeclared sesame and tree nuts. The recalled product was sold in the Deli section of Coles and Bi-Lo supermarkets in NSW, ACT, TAS and VIC.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): S&B Gourmet Foods (Aust) Pty Ltd., trading as Salad Servers, recalls Chickpeas with Roast Pumpkin Salad (500g and 350g; Use by 23/02/12), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold at IGA, Supabarn and Thomas Dux Supermarkets in New South Wales and Victoria.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Nuts & Spice Co. (Union City, CA) recalls HB Rewari Gur-Flat Jaggery Candy (28 oz; Product of India; All date codes), due to unacceptable levels of lead. The recalled candy was distributed to retail facilities in Northern California.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Chili Station (Ludlow, MA) recalls The Chili Station Beef Chili with Beans (5-gal containers and 1-gal bags; Est. 6380 or P-6380) and The Chili Station Beef Chili with Beans and/or Turkey Chili (5-gal containers and 1-gal bags; Est. 6380 or P-6380), because they may have been produced without the benefit of federal inspection. The recalled products were sold in Massachusetts.
  • Outbreak Alert: Officials at George Washington University (Washington, DC) report that about 85 students have been infected with norovirus in the last week. No common link was found.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Campylobacter raw milk outbreak associated with The Family Cow dairy in Pennsylvania has sickened 77 people in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Les Viandes CDS Inc. recalls Bégin Frozen Pepperoni (2.78 kg; Code #35111), due to contamination with metal particles. The recalled product was distributed to hotels, restaurants, and/or institutions in Québec.
  • Health Alert: Health Canada advises Canadians of a possible association between the use of prescription stomach antacids (proton pump inhibitors) and an increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. While healthy adults are not typically vulnerable to C. difficile infections, the risk of infection increases with advanced age, severe underlying illness, hospitalization, or antibiotic use.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert: Auchan recalls Auchan Oriental Taboulé (400g, 600g, and promotional 400g + 200g free; Best before 15/02/12), due to the presence of undeclared seafood.
  • Allergy Alert: ERUs Kasewerk Sangerhausen GmbH recalls ERUs Cream Cheese Exquisito – Indian Spices, due to the presence of undeclared mustard and celery.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fiskerikajen ApS recalls Spéciale écaille d’argent 96 No. 3 Oysters (Lot #12034EC3, 12046EC3 and 12056EC3; Production dates 18/1-2012, 27/1-2012, and 3/2-2012, respectively), due to norovirus contamination.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a food poisoning outbreak that has sickened 50 students, who complained of abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea approximately 1 to 20 hours after having lunch in a primary school in Tuen Mun on February 14th.

Australia and New Zealand

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Australia): Integria Healthcare Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Greenridge Gastrocalm Liquid (200ml bottle; Batch #5972; Expiry 08/14) and Greenridge Triplex Liquid (200ml bottle; Batch No. 6797; Expiry 08/14), because the affected bottles have been mislabelled.
  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): Central Queensland Public Health Unit warns of a recent rise in the number of cases of Cryptosporidium infections across the region. Twenty-six cases have been reported so far in 2012, versus the usual number of 25-30 cases for an entire year.
