Excedrin, Etc. Recalls

On January 8, 2012, Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. recalled an extensive list of Excedrin, Bufferin, Gas-X and NoDoz products due to tablet mix-ups and chipped or broken tablets or gelcaps.

There is a possibility that prescription analgesics may also have been mixed with the recalled products. FDA has asked me to share the following warning:

To ensure continued patient safety and access to needed medicines, FDA and Endo Pharmaceuticals are providing instructions to patients and healthcare professionals on how to identify an incorrect pill in an opioid pain medicine prescription.

 We are asking patients to check their medicines to look for any tablet of a different size, shape or color from their regular medicine. If they find any tablets that are different from the rest, they should stop taking their pain medicine and take their medicine to their pharmacy. We are telling patients to look carefully at all of the tablets in their pain medicine bottle. For any questions, patients can also contact Endo Pharmaceuticals at1-800-462-3636 or ask their pharmacist or doctor for additional help in identifying whether there are any problems with their medication. Endo Pharmaceuticals has posted pictures of their opioid analgesic tablets on their webpage to serve as a resource for tablet identification.”

This recall has been brewing stealthily and steadily since July 2011, when FDA issued a scathing report on the Quality Systems at Novartis Consumer’s Lincoln (Nebraska) plant.

I really wish people would stop saying they sell generic brands is the same as exedrine..because it is NOT…i have not found anything close to ending my headaches as fast as excedrine or at all……ive been using excedrine for many years and this new version is definitely not the same…and there is no other like it…..please bring the old version back….the round tablets😩

  3. I was in Walgreen’s pharmacy today and they have an Extra Strength Headache Relief product that id EXACTLY the same as Extra Strength Excedrin and they have plenty of it. This is not the migrane excedrin clone, it is the same as the extra strength excedrin eactly as far as I can see by reading both the active and inactive ingredients. Less expensive too, by the way.

      1. I wondered the same thing Carol. I saw Excedrin Migraine at CVS but not Extra Strength Excedrin. The active ingredients are the same but the inactive are different and that must make a difference because Excedrin Migraine makes me feel sick but X-tra strength does not.

  6. Dave, you are the first person that ever mentioned anything about different Excedrins being the same. I too have been very annoyed by that fact. I wonder how many people fall for it. I too use generic and most of them have the same ingredients as Excedrin so why should we be stupid and pay more? I agree with you whole-heartedly.

  8. oh god what happen to my excedrin ,go find a asprin that said compare to excedrin and it is just that ,not extra coated for us with stomach problems ,who care just get rid of my pain ,but the others copy excedrin and has same stuff exactly what they do happy hunting its noit hard to find copy cats

Hi everyone, I’ve been an excedrin user for years and I thought nothing else could relieve my headaches, but I found that if I take one Anacin (32 mg caffeine and 400 mg aspirin) and one extra strength Tylenol (500 mg acetaminophen), it works just as well as excedrin in relieving my tension headaches. I hope it may help some of you with your pain as well.

  14. I’m 63, and like the previous poster, my general pain is getting worse with age. I’ve been taking Extra Strength Excedrin tablets (not gel tabs, caplets, migraine, or whatever) for most of my adult life for anything that ails me–headaches, chronic backaches, flu, colds, sore muscles, etc etc etc. As we all know, doctors are not going to give you a prescription narcotic medicine for chronic pain, the latest fad of prescribing antidepressants for pain is a joke, it doesn’t work. When the Extra Strength Excedrin went off the market I tried recreating it by taking aspirin, acetomenaphin, and then drinking some coffee. Doesn’t work. I also tried the Goody Powders because they contain the same ingredients. Also doesn’t work. Don’t know why the Excedrin works, but apparently it does for many people, not just me. Let’s get them back on the market ASAP

  17. I only have 1 true addiction and that is Mt Dew. Generally I try to stay away from them but found myself back on them recently. When this happens and i go more than a day without one I get headaches and the only way to get rid of the headache is an Excedrine thrown back with a my dew. I woke up with one of the headaches a couple days ago at midnight and went for a drive to find a single dose. I don’t keep up with the news so I had to drive to 6 stores before someone told me about this. Guess what… I NEVER do this but I took

I also want Excedrin back but for those of you who take a lot of it daily, you might want to cut back or wean yourself off completely because you are probably experiencing rebound headaches which can be worse than the original. It’s like your headache is addicted and you need the Excedrin to get relief. I have gone through this so I am well versed in rebound headaches. I now take 2 Aleve at an onset. This does not take the pain completely away but it lessens it. I only take Excedrin (or I would if it were available) about once a week. No cure for sure, But I can live with it this way.

I have to agree with every one here I also have suffered with migranes all my life there is not a day that goes by that I don’t have some form of headache when I discovered excedrin after trying everything right down to shots of Demerol I found Excedrin to be the best I have to take it everyday but in twenty minutes headache gone I was set in panic mode now what am I going to do so please hurry and bring it back

  21. I had a friend tell me there wasn’t any Excedrin on the shelves so I looked it up and I didn’t realize it had been taken off the shelves. I have been a migraine sufferer since 9th grade (now 42); but I know I am addicted to the caffeine in the Excedrin as well as other readers I see here. I have taken it, then gotten off of it and then I have a headache and have to take it again. I don’t think I can ever not take it. Some have said they have tried the generic brands and they don’t work; but they are the exact same thing with the same exact ingredients. I buy them from Target, Walmart & Meijer. It is usually called Migraine medicine. The only thing in Excedrin that is helping with the headache is the caffeine. If you are not a migraine sufferer and only get bad headaches than try drinking a pepsi or have a coffee. I only buy generic now and I take it every day. I recently had a blood test and and found out I was allergic to gluten as well as some other foods. This was part of the reason I was having so many headaches because the food I was eating was literally toxic to my body. Try a food allergists if you are interested in eliminating the headaches. Caffeine is a potent legal drug if you take if for too long and too much you will always have a headache. Best thing is to get off of it and stay off of it if you can.

  22. I have tried all types of replacements for Excedrin — mostly various store brands with the same ingredients at the Excedrin brand. If there is a Costco in your area try the Kirkland brand (which is Costco’s brand) pain reliever, with the same exact ingredients. For some reason it is the only one which has worked for me since Excedrin went off the shelves. This one is so good and works so well that i may not even go back to Excedrin. I was having panic attacks until i found a replacement. People will tell you as long as it has the same ingredients it will work the same —- but I do not find this to be true (not sure why). Some work way better than others!

    1. where can we buy Excedrine again? Not available in Rochester, NY from what I see on shelves. When and where will Excedrine caplets be back? We (my family ) really like to have Excedrine caplets for a couple times during month and than ok without it.Only med that truly works on migranes.

  27. I had always stocked up on Excedrin migraine. I ran out of it last week and went to CVS to buy more. Couldn’t find it on the shelves, so I was like a rabid dog. Asked the Pharmacist and he told me the story. I had a meltdown. Excedrin Migraine is the only product that helps with my migraines. BRING IT BACK NOW!! Have been buying the generic brands, they only help a little 😦

  33. I’d like to know why it’s taking so long for excedrine to come back on the shelves. It’s been over six months. I’ve never seen a product take this long to come back after a recall. Is there something more serious than possibly having some wrong pills in the bottles? It really doesn’t seem like a problem that would take this long to solve.

    1. I have the same issue with headaches and nothing else works! I ran out about 2 weeks ago and tried the Wal-Mart generic brand and they work! If your like me and can not function with the headaches I get, give the generic a try 🙂

  40. I just spoke with Novartis Consumer Relations, they again stuck with the “mid year” comment, of when the products will begin to return. They will not, and they have not been informed of a specific date, yet! You can call them (wait till after the recorded recall message)

  42. I have taken Excedrin for years – it’s the only thing that relieves my headaches. I take the aspirin free version – as I have a blood clotting problem and cannot take aspirin. so the generic brands w/their aspirin is a no no for me! Hurry back Excedrin!!

  43. I thought I was the only one who preferred the “round” exederin. I don’t care for the long ones. Lucky me, my husband and I always buy a lot of exederin and hope to have enough til they come back on the market. I was shocked when I heard we couldn’t get them anymore. I’ve searched to find a product that will work in case we need them later. Vanquish seems to do an okay job. But still, there’s nothing like a couple of exederin to do the job.

  44. I have taken 3 excedrin 3 times a day for 30 years. Like everybody else, it is the only thing that works for headaches. Now if there was a problem with it don’t you think I would be effected by it. I agree with earlier post, the only reason they took it off the market is because it works. This many people who are writing in can’t be wrong.

  49. My wife and I have been taking Exceddrin Extra-Strength for about 3p years and it works like a charm. Never had a better pain reliever. I was a long haul trucker and I hurt my neck and bought Exceddrin for the pain so I cojuld return home. It relieved the pain all the way from Indiana to Massachusetts;

    1. You can get a generic “excedrin” at CVS or Costco. The ingredients are 250 aspirin, 250 Acetaminophen plus caffeine. It works exactly like Excedrin.

    1. I learned that Pamprin Max has the same ingredients and it works as well as Excedrin for me. I am not always happy with generic version of Excedrin.

  54. You need to tell all the people that took the excedrin away that they are a bunch of haters. They need to be looking into pill that dont work, not ones that do or can you make a over the counter vicodin a lower grade of course. We don’t spend are tax dollars on them just so they can make it harder on us.

  61. I take 2 excedrin migraines for my headaches and 1 excedrin PM at night to help me sleep. Hopefully these will go back on the market very soon. In the meantime, I take 3, yes 3 aleves for my headaches and they do help but takes longer to work. I want my excedrins back. The sooner the better.

  62. for months ive been driveing everyware to find the little 2in a packet ,every morring i wake up with my head pounding 2 excedrines and its gone in 30 minutes PLEASE put it on the market again.even my doctor has tryed to help me but nothing ealse helps.ive been taking them for over 20 years .there are days i don’t need them,like once a week .but i can’t find anything.so i drive all morring looking for them.

I dont know if it is the same with you but I had to take Two Excedrin every morning for thirty years and what I found out was that I was addicted to Excedrin what they dont tell you is that it is loaded with caffine, I finally got off of it by drinking a Mountain Dew as soon as I felt a headache starting ang finally I quit doing both, Good luck.

  64. I, too, take 2 Excedrin daily. Until it is back on the market I am taking Walgreen Extra Strength Headache Relief containing acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. It works but not as well as Excedrin. My neurologist said Excedrin works as well as the expensive prescription drug I was using.
    My internist says the Excedrin would not hurt me. When will it be back on
    the market?

    me. I have had a lifetime of headaches. Until Excedrin is back, I am taking Walgreen Extra Strength Headache Relief containing acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. It works but not quite as good. How much longer until Excedrin

My wife and I ride recumbent Trikes up to 40 miles and back and body realy works . hope it is back on market soon. why,if something works so good do they take it away.?

  68. You all realize that all the excedrin products r the same, the names r different. I have been taking excedrin for years n tried different types n I find them to all be the same, so I stick with the extra strength n it does the job for headaches n all my other pains I have. No other products work for me. I’m surprised how many people didn’t know about the recall. I work at a retail store n knew bout recall from news reports n I tell people bout the recall n am asked when it will be back on the shelf. I NEED IT SOONER THAN LATER, CAN’T WAIT ANOTHER 3 MONTHS FOR IT TO BE BACK ON SHELVES. Believe me, I look for it everytime I work.

    1. i suffer from meniargis too so i understand your pain! when i get mine i lose my vision beforehand so it’s really scary. i decided that i had enough and i went to the doctor and they gave me prescription migraine medication. you shouldn’t have to live with that pain and there are medications that should help. definetly go to a doctor and try to record the dates of your meniargis, mine happen around the time of my period. i hope you feel better =).

  70. How soon will Excedrin be back on the shelf? I suffer from MS, Degenerate Disk Disease and Psoriatic Arthritis. No over the counter medicine helps me with my migranes like Excedrin. I also use the Excedrin back and body for my arthritis. I don’t always want to take a pain pill and sometimes the pain is severe to add the Excedrin with my pain med. I am sure Novartis is doing all possible, and they are an excellent company. I just need my Excedrin because nothing works like it. Can I order it online?

  72. I’m going to kill myself as i can’t deal with the pain . Excedrin is the only product that helps me when I get these headaches without it the pain is horrible. Its a non stop nightmare please someone help me!! I’m very close to pulling the plug .

    1. Excedrin all that works for my daily headaches. I take 3 per day, have for 40 years. If I don’t I get a migraine. Tried Walgreens generic version and it worked. I was shocked, thought I was screwed. Give it a try.

    Here’s what we need to do: post as many recommendations for alternatives as possible. This will help Novartis understand that continued delay will erode their market.
    There are some recommendations in earlier posts. Here’s my alternative for Extra Strength Excedrin: 1 asprin, 1 Tylenol, and a cup of coffee. This approach works fairly well, and contains the same ingredients as Excedrin.

  84. I am definitely with all of you on when will excedrin be back. I am a migraine sufferer for more than 15 years. Although nothing really compares to excedrin, you can try these things in the meantime: try Tylenol rapid release with a little coffee (the caffeine helps speed the process); try little corner stores or pharmacies to see if they sell the single envelope excedrin packs that contain only 2 pills for no more than $1.00. Most people still carry those because you can’t mix pills in them (at least that’s what I was told in a pharmacy that carried them). Hope this helps guys. It has gotten me thru my headaches in this trying excedrin recall time.

    1. Thats because the two packs are a different company Norartis dosen’t make them. But all the 7-11’s had them in my area but took them out of the stores too.. I’ve taken excedrin from 12 years to 62
      for my head Nothing else worked — my grandma 30yrs to 89 — my mom 30 to 83 — my aunt 30’s to 81 but I found the same in Safeway bran extra strength one and extra strength asprin for back pain one of each have do the work for me and my mom scense Jan 11-12 Kathy Davis

  85. Looking for info on when Exedrine is coming back and I stumbled on this site. I’m glad to know that it’s not just me bugging out about not having Exedrines. Hopefully they will be back in June. Like many of you I have been searching furiously for a comparable headache reliever and I have found just 2. They aren’t as good as Exedrine of course but they work in a pinch. The first is called Headache Relief made by DrugStore brand and can be found in Exxon stores and some BP stations, they come in a tube container with 10 tablets per container for about $2.49. The second is called Pain Aid and is distributed by Zee Medical. 100-2 tablet packs can be purchased on their website for $14.30, you will need to create an account, I haven’t ordered any yet so I’m not sure about S/H charges, I was getting mine from work. Hope this helps.

  88. I have been using Exedrin Migraine for as long as it has been made. I get excruciating headaches sometimes and it is the ony OTC brand that works. By the way, have been using CVS brand and have not had any problems. But will keep an eye on my blood pressure.

    At least the meds are made in USA! 🙂

  89. Found the answer!!! go to Google & Lincoln Nebraska newspapers. Lincoln Journal. (Nebraska is where Excedrin is made) they have an article stating the plant needs $120 million in upgrades to pass FDA safety codes and Exedrin will not be bottled again until MID-JUNE. Channel 4 news Michigan online also corraborates this story

    1. As long as the Active Ingredients listed on the package are the same, any product will work. There are a few that have the exact same Active Ingredients: 250 Aspirin, 250 Acetaminophen, 65 Caffeine.
      Don’t let the hype get to you. Buy a generic.

  93. I am 72 years old and the only thing I can take that does ANYTHING for old age aches and pains in my joints and chronic headaches is excedrin. I have used it since the first day I found it on the shelf and withdrawal at my age is NOT pretty. My doctor shudders when he hears how much I take a day, but he is a young thing and should not have left his mother. Come on boys, lets get the lead out and get this stuff back on the shelf.

  98. I just ran out of my Excedrin Back & Body. When I went to Walmart to get more, I found out they had been recalled. What a disappointment. They are the only thing that helps all of my body pains. I’m hoping they will be back soon.

    1. I was using 2 tablets of aspirin 325mg with a cup of coffee and it worked fine until I found excedrin like 20 years ago. So I guess I will have to go back to the cup of coffee

    2. Excedrin is the only drug that stages off migraines for me. 3 per day in the morning for 40 yrs. Its excedrin or a migraine later. My worst nightmare-no freaking excedrin. I could just strangle that novartis or whoever they are. Anyway I get a little paniced because I am about out. I have tryed generics and none worked,but I have nothing to loose. I’m across the street from walgreens so I get their generic. BOOM, it worked. Thought I was wasting money but its worked 2 days in a row. Give it a try. Nobody is a bigger “excendrin only ” user than me and walgreens brand worked. Only product I ever used other than exceeding that took my headache away.

  101. I really hope someone from Novartis can respond soon with positive affirmation that this med. will be coming back by mid-year or not. If people can at least know, then they can act accordingly. There are so many people that need this medication to ward off debilitating migraines that affect work, their social lives, and just plain ability to move their body. I believe the FDA owes a response in addition to Novartis. For the FDA to not even be concerned with a response for “We the people” shows how much they care about the hurting of our society. If THEY are looking out for our well being, then THEY would also care about a response timing.

  102. Nothing works for migraines better then Excedrin, unless you get a prescription from your doctor. Ive survived with it ever since it came out. Now im useing Advil Migraine but its not as effective nor does it work quick enough. I hope that they will put this product back on the shelves soon.

  105. I, too, am dependant on excedrine. I take it for everything-arthritis, headache, depression. I am dependant and only have enough for 2 in the morning for a few more weeks. I am not doing well with only 2 a day, but I have to stretch it out. Please let us know what is going on. Like, how long before we can get more. I have tried excedrine generics from Target, CVS and Walmart. They just don’t do what the real thing does. Even tried ordering some from Canada but same thing there. Carol

If you click on the link above, “FDA Inspection Report Slams Novartis Inaction”, you can read all about how Novartis was so poorly operated since a 2009 inspection, “over 400 consumer complaints”, and several subsequnt failing reports, all the way until January 8, 2012 when they finally began to take action or be forever shut down by the FDA.

  111. I too have taken Exedrin for years. It’s the only thing that helps my sinus headaches. I found Goodies extra strngth headache powders. The work wonderfully. A bit of a nasty taste, but it works. I disolve the packet in a cup of coffee.

  116. Try using Walmart equate Midol. It has 60 mg of caffeine and 500 mg of acetaminophen and take an aspirin. Seems to have the same effect as Exciderin Migraine. The only difference is the 15mg of Pyrilamine Maleate, which is a Diuretic.

  121. This really stinks Exedrin is the only one that helps with my headaches. Now its gone. I’ve tried Anacin, it doesn’t work. I’ve tried genric Excedrin, they don’t work. I’m told its the genitic make up of the drug, how its formulated. That makes sense. All I know is my headache needs Exedrin NOW!

  130. I had a MAJOR headache this morning…alas no Excedrine. What to do, I drank two expressos and took two extra strength Tylenol and it worked. I am headache free. Caffeine does wonders for a headache. Hey maybe I’m on to something…LOL Hope this helps someone else.

      2. Be careful! You should not be taking Excedrin on a daily basis. You could develop kidney problems, liver problems, or analgesic rebound headache. 3 days out of 7 would be the maximum. You need to have a 2nd choice handy that is not aspirin containing. If you have chronic daily headache, you need to see a neurologist specializing in headache. My best wishes for you. I know this is not easy, but you may need professional help getting control of your headaches.

I would NOT take excdedrin manrgiae because it is full of caffeien, and when it wears off you are susceptible to rebound migraine, which sounds like the pressure you are feeling on the right side.I have an excellent headache doctor/neurologist, and sounds like you might want to find the same, if you do not have one already.I am attaching a link to the national headache foundation which might contain some helpful information for you until you get to a new doctor.Good luck, and sorry for your pain.

      1. I had been taking to Excedrin daily since 1986. Now that I am 62, my body has started aching more. The Excedrin was the only thing that help me through the day. I don’t drink, nor do I smoke. I never used illegal drugs. I am not dependent on Excedrin; they just work better than any other head remedy. I need and want the medication back on the market. It help me get through the day and rest without pain. Hurry up and bring it back!!!

        1. Just as many have said, most drug and grocery stores have their own brand that has exactly the same ingredients and I started using them long before Excedrin went off the market because they were cheaper. The work every bit as well. If they don’t work for you it’s mind over matter.
          One thing that really annoys me is that there are many different types of Excedrin— regular, migrane, etc. etc. and they all have exacly the same ingredients. Excedrin migrane says to limit dose to two tablets a day and regular Excedrin say you can take up to 8 a day every 4 to 6 hours. Do they think we are stupid and can’t figure out that they are putting different name on the same product to sell and reach people with different ailments. I even took two different bottles to the pharmacist and asked what the different was and they said there was absolutely none.
          I have had problems with my sacroilliac for about two weeks which is similar to sciatic pain and the generic excedrin one a day really does wonders for relieving the pain. I get mixed answers when I ask if two Excedrin a day is harmful however if the directions say up to 8 can be taken so I would assume it is OK.
          Go to Kroger, CVS , RiteAid or WalGreen’s and get the generic and you will be glad you did. This same thing happened with Tylenol about a year ago and it took forever before they were back on the shelves. I wonder iff the cost will be higher when Excedrin is back much like the gas situation.
